Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be shot at locations including the Gold Coast, the Great Barrier Reef and tropical rainforests in the far north, the federal arts minister, George Brandis, and the Queensland government announced on Thursday.
Queensland has been lobbying to attract the film-makers to the sunshine state for months. The federal government offered $21.5m in tax incentives.
The producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, is looking forward to returning to the state. “With its oceans, beaches, and jungles, Queensland has an incredible array of natural environments which are perfect for our new Pirates of the Caribbean,” he said.
Brandis said the feature film would be the largest shot in Australia. “This is a landmark deal with the Walt Disney studios; this film will be the largest international feature film ever to shoot in Australia and will focus the world’s attention on Australia as a leading film destination,” he said.
The Queensland premier, Campbell Newman, said the film would create thousands of jobs. “We dared to dream on this film, and it’s paid off,” he said.
There’s no set date for the start of filming, but the film is due for cinema release in July 2017.
